1 Introduction
The Singapore College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established in 1953 as the Chinese Physician Training College (renamed in 1976) by the Singapore Chinese Physicians’ Association. Since then, the college has grown to be a well-established Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) institution in the region, and has had more than 1,900 graduates.
These graduates are currently practicing TCM in various parts of Singapore, providing TCM treatment and healthcare to the public, contributing significantly to TCM development in the country.
2 Objectives of the College
The objective of the college is to promote TCM through organized and systematic teaching programs. This includes:
♥ studying and researching TCM
♥ establishing various TCM courses, including certification courses, Masters and Doctorate courses to cultivate and train professional TCM practitioners
♥ organizing various professional development activities, such as seminars and conferences, as well as short courses, to raise the standard of certified TCM practitioners and to promote TCM to the general public
♥ establishing branches to better provide TCM treatments to the public, and to provide more opportunities for clinical practice for its students
♥ fostering closer ties with TCM universities around the world, enhancing TCM education, treatment and research in the region.
3 Courses
3.1 Bachelor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (full-time)
This 5-years course is a joint program with the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be awarded with the certificate of Bachelor in Traditional Chinese Medicine by Nanjing University of Chinese
Medicine.
The course is conducted 6 days per week from 8:30am to 5:00pm, and students are required to attend 3 months of clinical practice at the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine in addition to clinical practice at the Singapore Chung Hwa Medical Institution and affiliated clinics.
The prerequisite for entry into this course is the GCE “A” Level certification or equivalent, except for bearers of passport of Peoples’ Republic of China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan).
3.2 Bachelor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (part-time)
This 7-years course is a joint program with the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be awarded with the
certificate of Bachelor in Traditional Chinese Medicine by Guangzhou University of
Chinese Medicine.
The course is conducted 3 to 4 nights per week from 7:00pm to 10:15pm, and students are required to attend 1 to 3 months of clinical practice at the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in addition to clinical practice at the Singapore Chung Hwa Medical Institution and affiliated clinics.
The prerequisite for entry into this course is the GCE “A” Level certification or equivalent, except for bearers of passport of Peoples’ Republic of China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan).
3.3 Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine
This course is a joint program with the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. It aims to nurture highly-trained professionals who can fully grasp the professional knowledge of TCM, apply TCM theoretical know-how in treatment, diagnosis and be involved in the scientific research of TCM.
The selected student has to take a development program formulated by the lecturers of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. Upon completion of all modules within 3 years, and having achieved the required score-points, undergone compulsory clinical practice and research, and completed the Master thesis with success in an interview, the student will receive the TCM Master Degree.
The prerequisites for entry into this course are:
i. Bachelor degree from a local TCM institution or Bachelor degree of any discipline and has systematically studied TCM or Acupuncture; or
ii. Equivalent qualifications (Diploma of Traditional Chinese Medicine or Acupuncture for at least three years post qualification) and has been in the specified profession relevant to the subject registered for study in Master Degree Course for at least three years.

(Note) Holder of Bachelor Degree or equivalent qualifications is requested to produce evidence and transcripts of systematic study of Traditional Chinese Medicine during enrolment.
3.4 Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine
This course is a joint program with the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. It aims to nurture highly-trained professionals who can fully grasp the professional knowledge of TCM, apply TCM theoretical know-how in treatment, diagnosis and be involved in the scientific research of TCM.
The selected student has to take a development program formulated by the lecturers of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. Upon completion of all modules within 3 years, and having achieved the required score-points, undergone compulsory clinical practice and research, and completed the Doctorate thesis with success in an interview, the student will receive the TCM Doctorate Degree.

i. Practitioner with Master Degree and a Diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine or similar field; or
ii. Master Degree student expecting to obtain Master Degree before commencement of Doctor’s Degree Course; or
iii. Bachelor Degree with at least six years post qualification and possesses qualifications equivalent to Master Degree.

3.5 Graduate Diploma of Acupuncture (for Western Medicine practitioners)
This course is specially catered for local Western Medicine practitioners. Upon successful completion of this course, students are awarded with the Graduate Diploma of Acupuncture
4 Teaching resources
4.1 Teaching staff
Currently, the college has 94 teaching staff members, including 15 are professors and associate professors. Further, there are more than 70 visiting professors from Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, and other Chinese Medicine Universities, as well as professors from the local University and practicing Western Medicine doctors.
4.2 TCM Library
The College has an in-house TCM library with a vast collection of TCM books and journals, all of which are easily searchable via a computerized database.
4.3 Laboratory
Laboratory practice for some subjects, such as the Chinese medicine preparation and western medical science, will be held in the laboratory
4.4 Clinical Practice
Clinical practice in the following areas will be held at the Singapore Chung Hwa Medical Institution and affiliated clinics.
i. Internal Medicine;
ii. Acupuncture;
iii. Various Specialized fields (such as gynaecology, paediatrics, massotherapy, oncology, etc)
4.5 Herbal Recognition Practice
Practice in herbal recognition and usage, will be held at the Singapore Chung Hwa Medical Institution’s herbal unit.
5 Course commencement
Generally mid-July of every year or as specified by management.
6 Applications
The closing date for the Bachelor courses is 14rd June 2008.
Applications can be made at the College Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 9pm
The following are required upon application:
♥ a completed application form
♥ original education certificates with one copy each
♥ original result slips with one copy each
♥ copy of I/C or passport
♥ 6 passport size photographs (non returnable)
♥ application fee of S$20.00 plus GST (non refundable)
All original documents will be returned upon validation by the administration office
The successful applicant is to complete a Student Admission Form and pay a security deposit of S$50.00 plus GST (only refundable upon completion of the course), registration fee, a quarterly tuition fee and yearly miscellaneous fee.
